chivalry

One day “David was in his camp, and there was a garrison of the Philistines in Bethlehem. And David longed and said, ‘Oh, that some man would give me a drink of water out of the cistern that is in Bethlehem by the gate.’ ”64 He had no sooner said these words than three valiant knights went out with hands and heads lowered, passed through the enemy’s camp, went to the cistern in Bethlehem, drew out the water, and brought it to David. When he saw the danger that these three chivalrous men had run to gratify his appetite , " he would not drink " that water obtained at peril of their blood and life , but " poured it out in sacrifice " to the eternal God.
