Vincent van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo that art is the essence of life and that giving birth to a child is the highest form of art. I have a sense that there are levels of human experience we will only come in touch with when we become father or mother. Maybe it is in the child that we come closest to the Eternal in life and get a glimpse of the moment in which the deepest rootedness and the greatest detachment touch each other. There we are most human and closest to God.
