serving others

One saying of his that they especially took to heart was this: “Only in prayer, and through prayer, do we learn to serve others.3 Serving others is not easy, especially considering his definition of it: “generously placing our hearts on the ground . . . so that others may tread softly.”4 Sometimes he would add to that, “This is not just a metaphor; it has to be a reality!”

Performing the household tasks, and taking care of the children, with a spirit of service, an attention to detail, and an effort to live in awareness of the presence of God—all of this provides me the opportunity to practice all the Christian virtues. The professional nature of my work as mother and housewife has also demanded of me that I keep improving so as to run my home with the greatest possible human perfection, not falling into routine.”
