family life and sacrifice

All this obviously required balancing or sacrificing other things. She would have liked to paint (though she would dismiss any concern about that desire by saying, “Oh, I gave that up when I was very young”), but the opportunity never arose. She did manage to find time to read, and to go out with her friends; but always without neglecting the care of the family. That was at all times her prime interest as well as commitment.
